What does Vitamin B12 do in the body?
Vitamin B12, also known as cobalamin, is essential for various bodily functions, including red blood cell production, releasing energy from food, and maintaining nervous system health. It also helps the body to use another vitamin called folic acid.
Vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms
Vitamin B12 deficiency usually comes on gradually and symptoms might not appear until it’s severe. Some symptoms include loss of appetite, indigestion, palpitations, and headaches. It can also cause mouth ulcers, vision issues, and pins and needles.
B12 neurological symptoms include extreme tiredness and a lack of energy, muscle weakness, vision issues, memory problems. Other examples of psychological problems are depression, anxiety, and confusion. If you have any of the above symptoms, you must make an appointment to discuss these with your GP. Many of the issues above can be symptoms of other serious conditions.
B12 injections Cardiff benefits
If you’re deficient in B12, having B12 injections can boost you back to healthy levels of the vitamin and improve many of the symptoms associated with the deficiency. Examples of benefits include:
- Increased energy levels – many patients notice a significant reduction in fatigue and a boost in vitality after their injection.
- An improvement in your overall mood.
- Better concentration and less ‘brain fog’
- Reduction in muscle weakness and vision issues
What are the B12 injection side effects?
Although generally safe, B12 injection side effects can occur in some cases. For example, you could get redness or swelling at the injection site. It may also cause diarrhoea, dizziness, headaches, and hot flushes. Serious side effects are very rare but include allergic reactions and palpitations. See the NHS page on side effects for more information.
How often are B12 shots needed?
This depends on the causes and symptoms of your deficiency. If it’s thought to be diet-related, your GP would usually suggest a B12 injection two to four times a year. However, if your deficiency is causing neurological symptoms, you may be given injections every other day for 1-2 weeks and then have regular injections every 2 months.

Causes of Vitamin B12 deficiency
The most common cause of B12 deficiency is a condition called pernicious anaemia. Specifically, this is an autoimmune condition that causes your immune system to attack specific cells in the stomach, thereby worsening your ability to absorb vitamin B12.
In addition to pernicious anaemia, some people in the UK don’t get enough B12 through their diet alone, particularly those who follow a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle. For instance, evidence suggests that around 11% of vegans have vitamin B12 deficiency. Furthermore, it’s more common for older people to be deficient in B12. To illustrate, data suggests that around 3% of 20-40-year-olds are deficient, whereas approximately 6% of people over 60 years old have a deficiency.
Although diet can be a cause, there are also many other possible causes of vitamin B12 deficiency. For example, other causes can be due to absorption issues in the gut, genes inherited from parents, and stomach diseases. Additionally, some medicines can increase the risk of deficiency. This includes nitrous oxide, proton-pump inhibitors, and metformin.
Vitamin B12 – what foods contain B12?
Vitamin B12 is primarily found in animal-based foods, making them the best sources for those looking to boost their intake naturally. For instance, red meats such as beef and lamb, particularly liver, are excellent options. Poultry like chicken and turkey also contain significant amounts.
Moreover, seafood is another fantastic source. Fish such as salmon, tuna, and trout are packed with B12, while shellfish like clams and mussels are among the richest natural sources. Additionally, eggs and dairy products, including milk, cheese, and yoghurt, are convenient and versatile options for vegetarians or those who may not consume meat or fish regularly.
What B12 level is normal?
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) say that measuring serum cobalamin can help diagnose B12 deficiency. However, they say that it’s not clear what a normal cobalamin level should be. Although normal levels are unclear, there’s a 97% likelihood that a person with cobalamin levels below 200nanograms/L has vitamin B12 deficiency.
If someone has levels above 350nanograms/L, they are unlikely to have B12 deficiency.
Can B12 deficiency cause hair loss?
Many people think that B12 deficiency can lead to hair loss or alopecia, however, there is little evidence to suggest this is the case. For example, one study in 2013 concluded that alopecia is likely not associated with B12 deficiency. A recent 2024 review of the role of vitamins in hair loss suggests there is no difference in B12 levels between patients with hair loss and patients with no hair loss.
