Private weight loss clinic in Cardiff

Wellness Pharmacy in Old St Mellons runs a pharmacist-led weight loss clinic, in store or by video call. We start with a free consultation to check whether prescription weight loss treatment is safe and suitable for you.

If treatment is appropriate, we explain your options, supply your first month and see you every month to review your progress. Booking a consultation does not guarantee that treatment will be prescribed.

Local clinical support, not just an online form

Many online services rely on a questionnaire. At Wellness Pharmacy you speak to a pharmacist prescriber who checks your measurements, medical history and current medicines, and talks through what is realistic for you.

You can attend in person at our Old St Mellons pharmacy or have your consultations by video call, and you will see the same local team throughout your treatment.

Who may be suitable for the weight loss clinic?

Prescription weight loss treatment is only suitable for some people. You may want to book a consultation if you:

  • ✓Are overweight or living with obesity
  • ✓Have struggled to lose weight despite trying different diets
  • ✓Want to talk through your options with a pharmacist
  • ✓Are already on treatment elsewhere and want to transfer

Eligibility depends on your BMI, any weight-related health conditions, your medical history and your medicines.

What happens at your appointment?

  1. Book your free consultation

Choose an in-store appointment in Old St Mellons or a video call at a time that suits you.

  2. Clinical assessment

We check your weight and BMI, medical history, current medicines and any reasons treatment may not be safe for you.

  3. Discuss the safest option

If treatment is suitable, we explain the options, how they work, likely side effects and how to use them.

  4. Supply and monthly follow-up

We can issue a private prescription and supply your first month straight away, then review your progress every month.

How prescription weight loss treatment works

The weight loss medicines we prescribe mimic natural gut hormones (GLP-1, and in some cases GIP) that help you feel full sooner and reduce appetite. Most people eat less as a result, which helps them lose weight when combined with diet and activity changes.

Reduced appetite

Many people notice a reduced appetite within the first few weeks of treatment.

Gradual dose increases

Doses are increased step by step to help your body adjust and reduce side effects.

Lifestyle support

Treatment works best alongside changes to diet and physical activity, which we support at each review.

Important safety information

Weight loss medicines are not suitable for everyone. Tell us if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding, or have a history of pancreatitis, certain thyroid cancers, gallbladder problems or an eating disorder. Seek urgent medical help if you develop:

  • Severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing
  • Severe or ongoing vomiting or diarrhoea with signs of dehydration

Common side effects include nausea, constipation, diarrhoea and indigestion, which often settle as your body adjusts. Use NHS 111 Wales for urgent advice, or call 999 in an emergency.

Treatment works alongside lifestyle change

Medicines help with appetite, but lasting results come from changes to what and how much you eat, and how active you are.

At each monthly review we check your weight and BMI, how you are getting on with treatment, and give practical advice on diet and activity.

Transferring from another provider

If you are already on treatment from another provider, we can review your history and current dose and, where appropriate, continue your care locally.

Please bring details of your current treatment and dose to your consultation.
