What is adult ADHD?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that can affect attention, organisation, activity levels and impulse control. In adults it can affect work, study, routines, finances, driving, relationships and emotional wellbeing.

Symptoms usually begin in childhood, but many people are not recognised until adulthood. Anxiety, depression, sleep problems, autism and other conditions can cause overlapping difficulties, which is why a full diagnostic assessment is needed.

Who the service is for

  • ✓Adults with long-standing attention, organisation, restlessness or impulsivity difficulties
  • ✓Adults who were not assessed as children
  • ✓Adults with an existing diagnosis who want their care reviewed
  • ✓Adults seeking specialist prescribing, titration or transfer of care

The service is not for under-18s or anyone seeking medication without a specialist assessment.

Who provides the service?

PrimeLife

Provides the UK-wide online ADHD pathway: assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning and continuing clinical care.

Wellness Pharmacy

Provides this local information and access page, and supports the regulated prescribing and dispensing pathway.

Your GP

May be asked to consider shared care once your dose is stable. GPs are not obliged to accept.

How the ADHD service works

  1. Complete the clinical intake form

Tell us about your current difficulties, childhood history, health, mental health, medicines and how symptoms affect everyday life.

  2. Invite an informant

Someone who knows you well completes a questionnaire describing your symptoms across childhood and adult life.

  3. Pre-assessment appointment

The team checks your information is complete and identifies any records needed before the diagnostic consultation.

  4. Diagnostic video consultation

A detailed 60 to 90-minute assessment using DSM-5 criteria and the DIVA-5 framework, including functional impact, risk and other possible explanations.

  5. Outcome and written report

A separate results consultation explains the outcome and next steps, and you receive a formal written report whatever the outcome.

  6. Titration where appropriate

If medication is suitable and you choose it, a supervised dose-titration period follows, usually around 8 to 12 weeks.

  7. Ongoing monitoring and shared care

Continuing care includes repeat prescriptions, six-monthly reviews and an annual medication review. Shared care with your GP may be requested once stable.

Seeking a first diagnosis

You will complete the full diagnostic pathway. A diagnosis is based on the complete specialist assessment, not a screening form or a single question.

Already diagnosed

Provide your diagnostic report, treatment history, current dose, recent monitoring and previous prescriber details. The team will decide whether these are sufficient or whether further assessment is needed.

Prices

All assessment, treatment and ongoing-care prices are shown before you are asked to pay anything.

Assessment, results consultations, titration, reviews, repeat prescriptions and medicines may be charged separately.

Private prescriptions and medicine supply

Where treatment is approved, PrimeLife may issue a private prescription. Wellness Pharmacy can dispense and post approved medicines to UK addresses.

Some ADHD medicines are controlled drugs, so quantities, timing and delivery are arranged individually.

Important clinical information

Before you start, please be aware:

  • Diagnosis, medication and GP shared care are not guaranteed: each depends on the specialist assessment and, for shared care, your GP’s agreement.
  • You must tell the DVLA if ADHD or ADHD medication affects your ability to drive safely.
  • This is not a crisis service. Call 999 or go to A&E if there is an immediate risk to life, or use NHS 111 Wales (press 2 for mental health support).

Frequently asked questions

Is this an NHS or Right to Choose service?

No. This is a private partner service. Booking is not an NHS referral or Right to Choose application, and it does not affect any NHS waiting list.

Can an online adult ADHD assessment be valid?

Yes, when a specialist completes the full history, clinical interview, mental-state and risk assessment and considers other explanations by secure video. It is not an automated online test.

What should I prepare?

A list of current medicines, your medical and mental-health history, any previous assessment reports, school reports or other childhood evidence, and details of an informant who knows you well.

Will I receive medication if I am diagnosed?

Not necessarily. Medication is one option and needs a separate suitability assessment and an informed decision.

Will my GP take over prescribing?

This cannot be guaranteed. Shared care can only be considered after your dose is stable, and your GP must agree.

Can under-18s use the service?

No. The service is for adults aged 18 and over.
